It's the start of an exciting new phase in our Portugal renovation: building new doors for the barn. A few weeks ago, we collected freshly-cut green timber from the local sawmill. After being left to season, it’s now ready to work with — and we begin shaping the pieces for what will become strong, functional barn doors. It’s the first stage in a multi-week project that we can’t wait to share with you.
Before getting started, as always there’s plenty of groundwork to tackle around the property. With the generous loan of a friend’s powerful brush-cutter, we cut down a huge patch of elephant grass ('arundo donax', also known as giant reed or Spanish cane), and cleared a dense bramble thicket that had been smothering an olive tree. The difference is dramatic, opening up space and making the land far more manageable.
We also take some time to respond to your questions about how we approach working during the summer months. While the weather shapes our rhythm, the focus this week is firmly on progress and constructive projects.
From clearing and preparing the land to taking the first steps on our barn door build, this episode is all about moving forward in practical, positive ways.
