Foil back plasterboard fails when installed using dot and dab adhesive. The glue won’t bond to the foil layer, and this Short shows what happens — and how to do it right.

The foil acts as a vapor barrier, and standard plasterboard adhesive won’t bond to it. The correct way to install foil-back boards is by using mechanical fixings, such as drywall screws with appropriate plugs or a metal framing system.

Always check the spec — the wrong method leads to failure.
