Window box flowers – fillers, thrillers and spillers! Container gardening

I’ve had so many requests asking if you can put permanent botanicals outdoors. The answer is, if the area is not in direct sunlight or the elements then yes you can and they will last much much longer
than the fresh. The reason they don’t like the sun or great outdoors – wind, rain, frost, snow etc is because over time the glue that holds everything together will break down & + they fade. My thoughts, if they are well protected then they actually do last ages.

I always remember my old Nan’s window box planting and she used to say you need fillers, thrillers and spillers to create the perfect display, so that is what I want to create today!

Things to gather –
- I’m using an old vintage wooden box, but any garden box or planter would work beautifully.
- For the fillers – dusty miller, lavender, roses, dahlias, primroses, hydrangeas etc
- For the thrillers – sunflowers, delphiniums, larkspur or antirrhinums or snapdragons
- For the spillers – ivy, roses, ranunculas, etc

Tip – what I sometimes do is plant up the box with real and once they stop flowering, replace them with permanent botanicals.
